GORONGOSA
NATIONAL PARK
Gorongosa National
Park is home to one of the most inspiring restoration projects
in Africa, located at the southern end of the Great East African
Rift Valley. Apart from the valley floor, it includes parts of
surrounding plateaus and rivers originating from Mount Gorongosa.
Gorongosa once supported some of the most dense populations of
wildlife in Africa, but most of the animals and connected ecosystems
were destroyed during Mozambique's devastating civil conflict
between the 1977 and 1992.
Today, the Carr Foundation in association with the Mozambique
government have developed a groundbreaking long-term restoration
agreement to help restore the entire region.
This huge project is directly benefiting surrounding subsistence
based communities with education and eco-friendly employment opportunities,
bringing them out of poverty.
Community work includes
restoring as close as possible the original natural infrastructure
of Gorongosa with tree planting and animal reintroduction. Other
vocations include the many servicing jobs associated with the
park's growing eco-tourism. Schools and health clinics are now
being built to vitalise and educate these communities towards
a healthy and environmentally intact future.
Importantly, the park has no connection with the extraction industry
and are proactive against encroaching gold mining in the surrounding
mountain forests and river banks.
Gorongosa's nondestructive, sustainable ecological principles
provides inspiration to its surrounding communities, away from
the down-spiralling vortex of mining and its dependency and instead
working towards protection and growth of the Gorongosa environment
- instead of digging up its fragile ecology.
*How
Laibach Helps
Laibach donations are initially focused on school building in
and around Gorongosa Park, which helps to educate new generations
of the indigenous people of Gorongosa towards protecting their
precious homeland and to work with it sustainably and interdependently.
When you buy a Laibach piece, fifteen percent of the profit is
awarded to selected conservation / wildlife protection organisations
and land-care educational programmes in developing countries.
